Domingo de Ramos, cumple, y hoy.

Weekend:
Friday I went to a carrete. I don't really know how to explain it in english with out a long explanation. En castelleno: fue un poco fome. Saturday I only got to sleep an extra half-an-hour than normal because I had a volleyball game. We lost in two very close games. I was very disapointed in my playing because I had some amazing poins and then others my team would have been better off with me off the court. After the game I went with Max to drop off Ignacia at a cumpleaños and then went to the mall to get a birthday present for his girlfriend. I also went to the bookstore to pick up La Odisea for my language class. Sunday we all slept in which was a nice change. After that we had breakfast at about 11 and then headed to mass at my school for Domingo de Ramos. Sebastian didn't go and I soon saw why. Because it was at the school there were mostly young kids, ie it was very hard to even hear let alone follow the service. After mass was much better though. As we walked out we saludabamos (greated) all our friends and thier families.

Monday 29th
The day started off with a test in Language class (yes it was on the Odessy that i had bought two days before). There were 10 questions and a short answer section. I think I did well on the multiple choice. The short answer was about Penelope's faith in Ulises. I answered the question but I don't know if the teacher will be able to understand it... I will put up my grade when I get it. During our conjeo class (it is like homeroom) we talked about the alianza. This is one of the hardest things for me to understand but I think i understand now. To celebrate the anniversary of the school they do this Alianza. The school splits in to two teams; this year it is China vs. Brazil. Why they chose this, who knows. Then each team makes dances, videos and plays music. Some how I got talked into doing a dance in the street and being a cheerleader. *hurra*

Tuesday 30th
The Ultima Cena del Señor. We celebrated this in class. It incuded washing the had of the person next to me ( like Jesus did with feet)=, a bread the size of a large pizza, and grapes that tasted like grapefruit. After school I went to a birthday party for Josefa. She turned 18 (most kids in my grade are turning 17 this year). Overall it was the same as an american birthday. There was more food (first snacks, then sandwiches and finally cake). Not everyone brought a present and the presents that were brought were not opened all at the same time so i didn't really see what others got her but i got her chocolates.

Today Wednesday the 31st
I don't have much more time to write because I am about to leave to build mediaguas!! I am going wiht a program called Un Techo para Chile. THEY ARE SO UNORGANIZED! Right now i think I will be going to Chimbarongo but originally i was going to San Fernando. EKK! Well I think I am prepared so where ever I end up I will just do what they tell me to.

Chao!

Best thing about chile? Worst thing about it?

You have no idea how hard this question is to answer. It is so hard to think of one best thing. I gues I will have to go with the people. They are all very caring, open, affectionate.
The worst thing is also very hard to think of. Probably the driving. There are a few people like my volleyball coach who are very aware(=good) drivers but mi papá and sometimes mi mamá drive quite the opposite.
phew that was hard.

What things do you miss most from America? Like item or food wise.

Not much. American gum, my cell, my tea cup, and that is about it. I only kinda miss my magazines. But I will just enjoy these luxuries even more when I get back to the US, yea?

Did you get your carnet? what information is on it? mom

I have my carnet but not the actual card. I can pick up the actual card April 1st. The paper has my informacion, a long number and not the most attractive photo. I also get a carnet for school sports. Last game I had to bring my passport because it had not been made yet.

24th of March
So last night there was a strong temblor right after I went to sleep. Luckily I didn't wake up because I needed the sleep. Sunday I had gone to sleep late and same with Monday night. Monday after school I jogged around the condominimo. The first lap was with Ignacia. We would jog slowly for about 2 minuntes then walk for a minute or two. When we reached the house she stopped and I ran only one more time around. I should have done 2 more laps but it was quite hot. Tuesday after school I went swimming with Ignacia while Sesbastian stayed at school for fútbol.
This morning my alarm didn't go off but luckily every mornig at about 6:30 mamá passes by my door and says good morning. After school I had volleyball which included an immence amount of excercizes. We did a pattern (30 sit-ups, 30 supermans, 30 push-us, 30 jumps and sprints) 4 times. ick. After volleyball I finally saw Juan Carlos (who I had been looking for all day) to ask if AFS woudl allow me to go work building mediaguas during Semana Santa with my class. He said no. I was devistated for about 2 minuntes. I had been in the car not more then 30 seconds when mamá said that Carmen Gloríes (the main coordinator of AFS) had called and said that I could go!!! YAY!!!
Now I will explain the project a much as I am capable of. My whole curso and possibly another curso as well has been invited to go do a service project in te 7th region of Chile. This is the region north of Concepción and about 2 regions south of Santiago. We will go to construct mediaguas from Wednesday the 31st until Sunday the 4th (5 días!). Mediaguas are a type of house named for the type of roof. Here is a photo: The only other thing I know is that it costs $10.000 so $5 USD. It seems a bit cheep even for just transportation.

Ok, estoy muerta. Necesito dormirrrrr!!!! Chao!

hey becky, your lucky you have no homework, but anyway how is school going?

School is great. My hardest classes are Philosophy, because it is 2 3/4 hours of talking fast; Music, because i am so un-freaking-talented; and my elective Language class, because like philosophy it is 1 1/2 hours of talking.
But my companeros help me out. Everyone is super nice and i have some really good friends so far.

Jueves, viernes, Sábado...

March 18th
School and volleyball. Volleyball on Thursdays is not required for my team but I went anyway to play with the "infatils" while Sebastian played soccer.

March 19th
School, volleyball and CVX. School was decent. We have music class on fridays as well as philosophy which should be super easy classes but are super hard for me. Oh well. I got a compliment; I was told that I am buena onda (soemthign like that) which means nice. I know the phrase ¿Qué onda? as 'whats up' but never really learnt the direct traslation. I'm in awe that some one can see that I am a nice person and tell me within 2 weeks even with the little spanish I have. If you counld not follow my thought process there the conclusion is just that I am really happy that my personality still is aparent.
Volleyball afterschool was lukily easy because of the game the following day. We just played 6 on 5/4 until 5:30/6 and then sat around talking when guys basketball needed the gym.
Because ended so early I took a quick shower when I got home and then joined Mamá and Igncaia in the car to drop off Sebastian off at Juampie's house for CVX. CVX is a club that stands for Comunidad, Vida, Cristiana or community, life, christianity. I had asked if I could join because it seems like for a good majority of my grade that is the activity on friday night and it will be a good way to do some community service. The usual process for joining the club takes a week because the participants have to vote on each person before they can join. I guess they were expecting me because when we dropped of Sebastian he talked with Juampie for about 30 secounds, turned around, told us not to leave, ran inside and came back out in 2 seconds tell me I could join them that night. There were 6 other kids including Ismael who early that day had told me that he wasn't really religious at all, he just goes to a catholic school because of his father. CVX started off with a prayer and then they started talking. we had dinner and after dinner we decided what our "project" would be. We decided on visiting abuelitos or seniors to talk with then 1 or 2 times a month. CVX is a club that helps out the community through communication rather than physical labor by the way. Over all it was pretty fun but most of the converstion was really hard to understand and I was tired. Oh well it will get easier eventually.

March 20th
Volleyball game!!! On the way there I drove in the coaches car with two other girls. Sebatian is jealous of me, whant to know why? Because The coaches car is a beautiful Eclipse that he had to go to Miami to buy. At multiple points during the trip we were going a good 80-100mph weaving in and out of traffic, but don't tell mom...(jaja)
I didn't have the right shorts or socks. Some one had brought shorts for me (which were way to small but hey I wore them) but I ended up wearing the coaches socks. awkward.....
I played fairly well I just need to fix a few things (get into the game sooner, know where I am in the front so I don't hit some one else's set, and know when to block and when to get off the net). I played the whole game which was fabulous. The game was soo close we lost the 3rd set buy two points. Final score: (25-17),(22-25),(16-18) MUY CERCA!!!

After that I came home (Coach drove faster on the way back becasue we weren't following anybody), took a shower and ate lunch. AFS people came over at 5 for once (literally 11 but it is the word for "tea-time"). Daniel, the boy from Melbourne, Australia was the first to arrive with his mother. His spanish is amazing. He has a chilean accent and participates in conversations like it is his native toung. I AM SO JEALOUS!!! He was in Punta Renias (far south Chile) for the first 2 and 1/2 months and then switched families and came here. He had troubles because he did not participated enough with his family. I'm glad that is not that my problem. Now he seems to be in a perfect placement with help from a change of attitude. The girl from Norway couldn't make it but Carola and Minami came. Both Carola and Minami speak only a little spanish and their native language isn't english but they both appear to be doing amazing dispite this. It was really fun. I felt really confident with my spanish the whole evening and met a lot of really cool people. My advisor is Carmen Gloria herself and her husband who is one of the principals at my school. Here is a photo of everyone. I'll tag people on facebook.

Sebastian had been out all day and came back about a half an hour after every one had left (which was at 9:30 ish). We had tacos and cake together and talked about our days. We had both had sports in the morning and after that he went to Santiago for CVX and to visit a family that he had built a house for last year. It was a good day but unfortunalty I haven't been to a carrete yet. People still are kind of shaken up from the earthquake.

March 21st
Slept it, had breakfast, played some games with Ignacia and then helped make lunch. We had tacos but insead of tacos they use pancakekes which is a crêp. I made the crêps and everyone was quite impresses that I didn't compleatly fail. "Bueno Becky". During lunch we were talking about Easter (or Semana Santa) and so I went online to look up Passover to see when that is. it starts the 30th and ends the 5th so basically the exact same time as Semana Santa. I called home just as my CO family was headed out the door to New Mexico. I had a 20 minute conversation with them and afterword expalined it all to Ignacia who had listened to it all dispite a great ammount of confusion. After we went swimming and now I am sitting here typing. Interesting yea? I am going into Santiago now to drop off Max at school. I'll take fotos no preocupan!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD! (And Happy St. Patties Day for the rest of you)

This is getting hard to do. The days are meshing together now that I'm getting more used to life. So Monday I talked about the tests and school mostly.

Tuesday
I took my camera to school and got a lot of really random photos. Me in uniform and students during recreo:

After school I watied for Tatan to finish soccer pratice. Girls basketball is also during that time so it possible that I might end up playing but I don't really want to. Who knows...
Once practice ended we went to the gas station to pick up a soda for Tatan. His coach pulled up right as we were leaving and they had a 20min "discussion" about an issue that had arrisen during practice. It was very akward for me because I didn't really understand what they were talking about at first and they were very close to one another and talked with their whole bodies. Finally the converstion ended and we left to take the bus. It was fairly easy. There is a bus we take for about 10 minutes in one direction and then another that we take about 7 minutes in the other direction. Facil ¿no?

TODAY: March 17th 2010

In the morning I woke up at the same time and got ready for school but did not go to school until 11-ish. After dropping of Sebastian and Ignacia we headed to Santiago (after waiting a good 10 minutes just to get out of the parking lot (estacionomiento). Once in Santiago we headed to register my Visa. Once that was done (which was surprisinly quick) we headed over to get my carnet. After taking a numer we went get photo copies across the street and to the bathroom. The lady collecting money for the bathrooms commented on my apperences "Que linda". My mamá was asked if I was her child and she said yea when asked where I got the aperances she said I looked exactly like my papá. Its healthy to joke around a bit in life.
After waiting a good 30minutes we realized that we did not want to wait another hour or more más. We decided to come back Monday morning and hopefully the line will be much, much, much shorter. So carnet Monday. And cell phone hopefully for this weekend!!
After school I had volleyball!! The coach works us hard but it is very fun. We started in the gym with all levels (and there are two guys playing!) and then at 5:30 went outside because the guys had basketball. I have realized that I am much more confortable playing in doors where I do not have to be terrified of road burn if I fall. Sebatian did not want to stay after school and wait for me so Papá picked me up afterwards. They are rally taking care of me here (SO) don't worry about me.
At the entrance of the condominimo there is a guy who maintains the gate. He gives us the mail as we drive in. AND TODAY I GOT A POST CARD!!! (Well it was addressed to my Chile family as well). Thank you Colorado family! it was a good surprise!
I took a shower and as I was coming out there was a phone call and I heard my mamá saying "i'm fine" or something like that in english which was a little raro. Sure enough I was not half way dressed when my name was called for the phone. I got to sing happy birthday to my dad and hear about his hopefully real birthday present.

Ok it is now 11:05 here. I'm tired. Nighty-night!!

Are you wearing the black shoes we bought? Are the school officials upset about your shoes? take a picture of the "revolting" shoes for us. And a fully picture of you in your uniform without regulation shoes. Please. Love Mom

Definatly wearing the Target shoes. I didn't really look to hard to find the other type because of my size, their uglyness and their price. I haven't gotten a photo of the ugly shoes yet. Maybe tomorrow. No one is upset about the shoes. They only really have to be black and they are ok with them.
Here is a photo that someone took of me looking at my new dirt stain. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4224440&id=631556007

Black out and a Monday

March 14th (repetition I know) 10:00PM
Just before Mamá began to cook dinner the lights went off. Luckily I had my handy-dandy head lamp on a close shelf so I did not walk it to a wall or worse steep on Ignacia on our way to the kitchen where the rest of the family was. They were totally prepared. They have to emergency lights because black out are quite common in the rainy season and now with all the after shocks we need to be prepared for anything. Ignacia was really nerviosa the entire night. On the way to school she decribed how she kept waking up during the night. So the lights: they turned off and in about 5 or 10 minutes turned back on just long enough for me to put away my head lamp. And then they turned off again. The second time they came back on Mamá made dinner and just as she finished cooking the lights turned off again. We ate by candle light and after dinner Sebastian took us all out side to look at the stars. They were so amazing. I wanted to take a picture but I decided that If i tried to go get my camera I would probably end up walking into many walls and I don't usually go looking for pain. As we were outside the lights came back on for good. After that we all quickly go ready for bed while we had light.

March 15th 9:45
So today we started the 3 day process of ensayos (tests). They are like CSAPs because they are durring school and mandatory but also like ACT/SAT because they are for getting into University. Today was the language examen. Tomorrow math. I was the first to finish the test partly because I skiped about 10 out of 80 questions because I could not understand the question and partly becasue I have been taught such amazing test taking skills (thanks any teacher of mine that might be reading this). Hopefully I got some answers correct. After I finished I was allowed to leave but I waited for two others to finish so I would not be alone. We had about and 1 hour and a half of Recreo (recess) because we finished quickly. The only other interesting part of the school day was lunch. After eating we are allowed to go outside and do what ever. I ended up sitting with Sebatian and all of his guy friends. Things I learned: a popcicle at the school store only costs $.20 USD and a piercing only costs about $3.50!! (I just need to find the right place to get a piercing).
After school I tried to go over to a friends house to do a homework assignment for Humanista but I couldn't figure out how to get back home so I couldn't go.
Tomorrow hopefully I will learn how to take the bus so I will be able to get around easier. The bus (or Micro) only costs about 30 cents!! Que bacán!! Wednesday I will hopefully begoing to pick up my carnet in the morning and then go to school and the after school I have volleyball. If the bus goes well tomorrow then I will take the bus home. And don't worry I'll be safe!!

First normal weekend

March 13th
Good day. Lots of people. Yay! I sleept in but not too late don't worry. It was only about 9:30. Sebastian had soccer practice for school. It starts at 10 every sabado. 10! Can you believe it! Usually weekend practices @ BHS start at 8! After hi practice (about 12:30) we went to pick him and Colomá up. On the way we stoped and Kutchen Haus (a german resturant*) To pick up a torta (tres leche cake).
We got home took it easy for a while and then at about 2 guests came over. Jorge I, Jorge II, Gabriela, and finally(!) Max. They showed up in a red mustang whith what stripes. I'll jjust put up a picture.
Once they arrived the grill was started. First it is lit and they they wait for it to turn to coals. After that a half-a-dozen different types of meat. We also had a torta de verduras. This is basically crêps layered with corn, avacado, lettus, tomatoes and tuna. For dessert we had the torta that we had bought that morning and a another that the guests had brought (a raspberry cheesecake). After lunch, which started at 3 and went till about 5, I took Ignacia to watch Sebastian and Jorge play futbol at the neighbor's house again.
Jorge was trying to do a fancy trick with the ball and accidently got a ball in his face instead.
We came back to the house and had a light dinner of sandwiches with the left over meat and the cakes. The night ended with watching the 2nd Narnia movie.

*There is a lot of German influence in Chile. After World War II many people connected to the Nazi party fled to Argentina and Chile to dodge punishment. On weekend mornings we eat bread with an assortment of condiments. Mi papá always has a piece of bread with cheese and peach marmalade (that mi mamá makes). When I looked a little surprised as he took a bite of the cheese and jam combo he explained that this is a German custom.

March 14th
Leisurely day. Woke up, desayuné, me duché, and then started the day. Max came back with a friend from schooland later in the afternoon was joined by another. So lets see; we played lots of pingpong, swam and ate today. Thats about it. I'm still debating weather or not to finish my homework. I think i'll just copy it off from online. Perfecto! Chao!!

Did you find any shoes your size?

Nope. But I haven't looked very hard. The style is actually quite revolting. I looked at my tennis shoes and those are a size 41 1/2. I don't think they make woman's shoes that big. And I definatly don't want to wear men's shoes.

Tell us about the family members LOve Grandma

Mamá- Well I can understand her spanish the best I think. She is very caring and open. She is actually pretty simular to mom in CO, just different. That happens when you go to another culture.
Papá- He has lost of rules. But he doesn't enforce them in a scary manner or anything. They just come out as strong suggestions. Very caring as well and expects respect.
Sebastian- a AMAZING brother. He is an older sibling that I haven't had before (eventhough I'm really 3 months older than him). He has my back and is will to help me when ever I need him.
Ignacia- SO SWEET! She loves card games. I taught her rat-a-tat-cat (just with a normal deack of cards) and she can't stop playing. It gets a little bothersome sometimes but i won't be admitting that to her anythime soon because I lover her for it.
Max- It's hard to say because I only just met him today for the first time. He is the hardest to understand becasue he starts his sentences loud and clear but then ends them quickly and quite. But he seems nice enough, he is letting me stay in his room which could be hard.

Black White and Weird all over

The 11th of March, a wacky day
It started off as a a creepy day. I hadn't started off wearing a sweater but as soon as papá saw that I wasn't wearing a sweater, he made me turn around to look outside at the fog. It was so foggy that I was surprised that mi papá was able to drive the car to school. Mi mamá was very quite the whole way to school because she was still very tired. The first class of the day is a 15 minute "home room". The teacher lights a candle and students take turns asking and giving thanks along with a prayer that I have not learnt yet and knowing me, probably will not learn. The teacher had gotten a new candle (bella) so she lit that one. As she as she turned around the candle flickered out.
At about 11:20, I was in English class watching Pride and Prejudice, a alarm went off. At first nobody really moved. Then people started standing up and packing up their bags. After about 30 seconds or a minuted of the annoying alarm the school started shaking. At this point most of the students were packed up so we started heading out to the "court yard"/"common area". It felt like 5 minutes later it stopped shaking but it was probably only a minute or two. After that we had break so no one back in the school. About five minutes into break the school started shaking again.
Most students were pick up after the second tremble so I felt very bored and alone. Chemistry started about 45 minutes later. It was much easier today because 1) there was no test and 2) the teacher wrote on the board. There were only two of my female classmates left by lunch and one was so shaken up that she couldn't talk or eat lunch or anything. I ended up eating a apple with the girl from my class and some kids from the grade below us. After lunch was Humanista-Languaje. There were only 4 kids in the class and I could not follow what the teacher was saying at all. Luckily Sebastian ended up coming to save me and we went home.
I am so exhausted right now and it is only 7:00. I think it is both from the immense amount required to be part of a conversation in español and because a tremble throws off you energy like none other. Well I think I am going to try to finish my homework (again for Languaje) so if possible this weekend I can hang out with friends!!
Until next time!!!

and the days go by

March 10th 11:17AM
Yes, I'm in school right now (writing not typing). It is a bit boring of a day so far, I won't lie. Math was the first class today. I was so fantastically easy. We were just working on exponents. I already finished the homework in class. Now I am in History. We are learning about pre-history, ick; I need to remember to thank Mrs. Jensen for skipping this section of history in AP world. There was just a tremble; the first tremble in school. Last night there were 2 that were much stronger then this one and were only about 2 hours apart.

9:25
So after History I had Ingles ( I am in advanced and it only takes me about 5 minutes to finish a worksheet) then Humanista. Humanista is my elective. I choose this one because it includes Language and History which will help me more with my spanish then Math would. After that was lunch. I eat with a really nice group of girls at an over crowed table. Sound familiar? It is a rule that we have to eat inside even with the AMAZING weather and beautiful campus, oh well. Then Química (Chemistry). Like Physics we had a quiz the first day. But this one was impossible. I didn't understand anything. I was awful. No one finished the test and to make the matters worse, the teacher showed no emotion. ACK! Luckily my final class was PE and it is fairly easy (for the girls at least). The girls and guys are separated which was insanely difficult for me. When I walked out of the locker room the guys were playing basketball and I almost walked over there to start playing too. The girls' exercise consisted of stretching, about 6 laps around the "common area" (for lack of a better word), an ab work out and a minute of lunges. *oh so exhausting* NOT! Sebastian described the boys PE class and it sounded more like basketball practice with a game of fútbol.
I was introduced to both the basketbol and volibol coaches. Both seem very nice! Volleyball strated today but I didnt have any of my things so I didn't stick around. It is also tomorrow and viernes so I will go then. Basketball starts next week. but I have to choose one or the other to play in the tournament because I guess they are the same day and time.
After school was the best. I came home and went swimming. Que rico!! I might not be coming home....

Preparing for and beginning school

March 7th
Well today was a very full day. First we woke up very early, well about 8:30, you know... We had breakfast and then headed of to the fería for school socks for me. After that we came home to quickly drop off the food and then we went to a friends house to pile into cars and head off to help. We had 4 cars of people. I met some of my future class mates: Juampi, Cocó y Andrea. We basically drove around looking for neighborhoods to help. Some of the places we went were Acuelo, Range, Valdiva de Paine, Abrante and Champa. The climax of the trip was in Abrante. We drove down a skinny road (with many trucks to fix the electricity) until we could not drive any more. Then we stopped and assembled and passed out bags of rice, milk, soup, cleaning supplies along with other odds and ends). I fell asleep on the way back to the friends house for “lunch.” This was at about 6:30PM mind you. Everyone seemed to be pretty surprised that I only had one hot dog. Luckily they were not astonished or offended for too long because we were playing Uno and there were many conversations.
After about a half an hour after we came home Papá came home, along with the rules. We said a prayer at dinner and we have to wear shoes all around the house y que más... well lets just say there are many more rules.

March 8th
First day of school! The first day was great. it was only a half day which was fabulous. I met many people but forgot most their names...
I only had one real class: lenguaje. At first the teacher terrified me but I am starting to like her. Tenía miendo de ella because I was in the class room before the bell with some friends, some of which were eating. She walked in and immediately shook her head and told the to put the food away in not one of the most kindest manners. Then after that a bunch of kids were late (like more then half of the class and she made them line up outside and come into the room single file. She also gave us home work the first day but luckily I understood it and it was easy.
After school, lunch and a nap I went and played tennis with Sebastian. On the way to the courts we walk on a main road to the next condominimo. On the way there I got honked at enough times that Sebastian ended up making me walk on the other side of him “so car would see him first.” Two others who live in that neighborhood joined us and we played for a very long time. I played surprisingly well but popped out my shoulder when I was serving so I didn’t get to practice my serve...

March 9th
So school is here along with the prayers. It appears that every day on the way to school we pray, and might I add it is a complicated prayer. Right now I only say the thanks part. Which I am finding out can also be an asking part...
I met 2 girls who listen to post-hardcore type music like me!!! Paz and Carolina!!!! I was so happy when I found that out! I guess Devil Wears Prada is coming the 12th of May.
I had home work the first day and now the second day as well in Languaje. Today was the first day of physics and we had a quiz! Luckily I did better then probably a 1/3 or a 1/4 of the kids and I didn’t even understand half the test!!!! Towards the end I realized that The teacher would probably be fine with me using my dictionary, so I pulled it out.
After school, which ended at the normal 4:00, we went to Santiago to the big mall. And jezz is it big. I don’t think I saw more than 2 thirds of it and we were there for more than 2 hours purely just walking around. I realized it is very hard to go shopping without a wallet because I didn’t even want to try anything on for fear of wanting to purchase it. I think that about wraps it up. Good night!

March 7th 1:00AM
So I heard today that school had been postponed again and this time untill the 15th. Lies. Colegio La Mision is still starting the 8th. which is tomorrow. But not really tomorrow. I haven't gone to bed yet. So I have two more sleeps until school. I can't tell if I'm excited or terrified. Or it is possible that I am completely neutral. Actually I think the last possibility is the most likely knowing me. I just hope every one will be cariñosos and forgiving of my lack of español.
Tomorrow I should be meeting Papá. He sounds terribly strict, especially at meal times. I'm a little nervous, pero es manejable.
Today: I went to the súpermercado with Ignacia and mamá. I got a bottle of lotion to break up my 20mil pesos. The lady at the check out looked really disappointed that I didn't have any thing smaller (20mil is about $40 by the way). I'm understanding the money now but kilometers are killing me.
After that we came home, had lunch, and went swimming! I hope my I will be able to burn off some of these calories by swimming and hopefully strengthen my shoulders...
We went to the mall today. But this was a closer mall. El Oeste and the other was El Sur. (West and South for those of you who need a hint). There were so many people there. It was like Disney World midday. We waited about 20 minutes for Sebastian and Ignacia to get their hair cut. Once Sebastian was done he shoed me around the mall. It is HUGE! 3 floors each a little bigger then a floor of Flatirons Mall. There is also a movie theater there. Hopefully I can see Alice in Wonderland soon! Has anybody reading this seen it yet? Is anybody reading this? Haha no I know someone is, thanks mom!
Lets see what else... Well once we came home it was about 9:30 so I was taught how to set the table correctly. After dinner I played cards with Sebastian and Ignacia and now Coloma is over with his PS2 to play fútbol. Yep that just about sums it up.
Besbos!

March 5th 1:40
I have a curse. Even when I go to bed at 5 in the manaña I still can't sleep in past 11. Oh well...
Because I woke up early I got to help the kids play with the bunny. This included helping Ignacia into the cage, watching her grab the bunny, taking the poor thing from her and finally settinging it down in the grass. And that mind you was the easy part. Pobre conejito! Chasing it so we could put it back into the cage was muy difícil. But I have photos!!

March 5th 10:48
Well it ended up being a pretty wacky day. After taking off my nail polish (sniff) I went with the guys to get soda. They decided to be lazy (which usually when talking about a man means more difficult). It was decided that they would tye a cart to the 4-wheeler (smart right?).

So i sat on the moto while Sebatian drove and the two other guys sat on the cart behind us.

On the way back they decided to stand up. smart right? well at least nadie cayó.

At about quarter after 7 we headed over to a neighbor's house to play fútbol. Well I didn't play but I watched. And took photos:

March 4th 2:14 PM
This morning I gave out the pot holders! Yippie! I always feel it is so awkward giving presents. At least once it is done every one feels better!
So at 3:30 i will be going to school to get books and shoes too. But i think the shoes are somewhere else.... I took fotos of the school the other day but i don't think i posted any so here.
Main class room area:

Biblioteca:

Y finalment EL GIMNASIO:

We watched a telenovela today. I actually really liked it. Among other dramatic things, was about a group of students who had a band. As the show was going on 'missing persons' messeges were being listed below. Sebastian has a conocido who is missing. Scary.
Going to the mall now for shoes and books!!

March 4th
So we went to school to get books but it was not today. Next week sometime? No sé. The mall was freaking crazy. I did not get shoes because no tienen mi numero. Oh well I guess I don't get to wear those ugly things. Shucks.
In the mall we went to Hiper Linder. It is like Safeway and Target comblined. Here I got notebooks and a towel.
On the way back there was a lot of traffic. When we passed the trafficy part guess what!?
Vendedores! We got bread for this guy and I awkwardly took a photo of him from the back seat.... Bienvenidos a mi vida.

life w/ internet

March 3rd 11:20PM
I am falling asleep as I write so this will be short. This morning we went to a fería which is very simular to the Farmer's Market but with clothes, books and otras cosas. Mi mamá dice que she likes to bye fruits and veggies at the fería because they are cheeper and better then in the supermarket.

oh and I will include a photo of the world's largest zanahorias.
We also had the wackiest drink. I forget what it is called. I'll have to get that name later. Just remember AFS students: it's not good, it's not bad, just different. It's called Mote con huesillo. The mote is this rice-corn thing and the huesillo is a big prune looking thing that I didn't end up trying because I had no idea how to eat it w/o spilling...

At the market I felt like everyone was looking @ me. One fruit vendor couldn't stop looking @ me and the person working w/ her (who was dark brown and as my host mom said feo) was joking that we were twins.
I hope I get tan quickily so I'm not quite as rubia.

The internet now works. YAY! Que magnifico! But la red is really boring. Yes truely. Life is so much more exciting. I am not doing anything tonight but going to bed early but tomorrow we might have some of Sebastian's friends over. I showed Sebastian the Culture Shock book that I red before coming here and he could not stop laughing as he read the section about pronounciation. He said that this section is the most important thing to study.

Speaking of studies here is my uniform. yippie!

Tomorrow We will be going to school to pick up books or soemthing. I'm not quite sure b/c I do not know what classes I am taking yet...

Home

February 28th 11:30PM
Since I ended with worrying about my host family I will start with they are safe. They are totally safe. A few glass cups broke and the internet is down but that is it. So since yesterday morning a lot happened. At some point in the day, I think it was morning, we had a meeting and they said that we had 3 options. Best: we would wait a few more days in Piquarquin then we would be able to go to our host families or replace / temporary host families in necessary. OK: We could go to Argentina. Worst: we would go home ie: back to the US.
None of those happened. we got on a bus super early thins morning and came to the AFS office in Santiago. There temporary host families were found for most and the rest of went to our true host families. Now back-track: yesterday it finally warmed up so I played tennis with some guys where I got too hot so I went swimming (in my tennis clothes). That night we had the option to sleep inside or outside. Most of us chose to sleep outside (with matreses por su puesto).

We were woken up at 7 and left on the buses at 9ish. On the way to Santiago we had a crazy detour. I got photos.

We got to Santiago surprisingly fast it was only about an hour and a half drive. Once at the AFS office, everyone put their things in one room and went into the tiny backyard. They had wi-fi there so everyone went online. I did not stay on too long because I was thinking I would have internet once I got to my house. I let someone else use my computer and she was on for a while but when she got off my name was called for me to leave on a bus. The bus took 4 of us headed to the San Bernando area to one of the host families houses. The neighborhood was a bit ruined from the earthquake. I have some photos.

Sebastian and Maria Teresa (mamá) picked me up and drove me about a half an hour to the house. We stopped on the way and picked up a carton of peaches (duraznos). I got to see my school. I guess there was a little damage inside but I couldn’t see it from outside. Entering their neighborhood was amazing. It is called a condominimo but is not anything like the apartment houses that you are imagining. It is a large wealthy neighborhood with big houses. Here are pictures of my house:
We had lunch (hamburger and arroz) and then went for a walk around the neighborhood. It will be great to run around when I get up the motivation to run. I unpacked all my clothes (with help from Ignacia and Reneta) and talked a lot with them. Sebastian and the dad of the family staying here went to find bread before dinner. It was very difficult because the super markets had closed. At dinner I talked to my grandma about religion which started because we were talking about school courses which include religion class. By the way Abuela and the second family do not liver here. they are both staying because of reasons with the terremoto. Ahora tengo much sueño y necesito dormir. I hope the internet works tomorrow!

March 1 9:10PM
There was just another tremble but I didn’t feel it because I was napping.
This morning I woke up about 9 and had breakfast with most of the family. After that I played card games with the girls and eventually Sebastian. I taught them I Spy first then B.S. then Spoons (or pen). The internet still is not working so I havent been able to post any blogs or talk to any one yet. Gurrrr.
After lunch and a game of keep away and some down time I went to the school with mamá, Sebastian, and Ignacia. I got my uniform. 2 red polos (1 woman’s XL 1 men’s M, because my chest is too freaking large) a gray skirt and a yellow PE shirt. The lady tried to sell me sweats for PE but they were too freaking hot just standing in the store. She showed me the girls shorts and the looked a lot like my volleyball spandex just blue so I did not get those. I might eventually.
When we came back we watched the Simsons for a while. In the middle of one of the programs there was a tremble and I jumped up. They kind of laughed at me because I had said ‘no tengo miedo’ but my jump had not expressed that. At least they are laughing rather then thinking I am the most awkward (torpe) human being born.
I decided that I was super tired so I just took a fake nap. This means I had my closed but unfortunately I couldn’t fall asleep.
I do not know what to do right now so I will share the words that I have written down to learn.
Parlantes= speakers, this word is very important for those music lovers out there.
Colet= hair tye, not rubber band if Julia is reading this.
Pinche= hair clip or bobby pin, pronounced very similar to the bad word in Mex Spanish.
Aros= earings, not aretes
Cintiros= hair band
Torpe= awkward, I just looked this up, so I don’t know if is correct Chilean.
Oh and I figured out my correct address. Está aquí:
Camino Melipilla 14200
Condominio el Cuarto
P.53 Padre Hurtado,
Santiago, Chile

March 2nd 2:00AM
So my mother had called when I was out (and confused the maid in doing so) but we finally reached each other. She said that Saturday she didn’t put down the phone so many people were calling. Ah I feel so loved. She also said that I’m in the news paper. I am completely astonished. My mom said that as soon as I can I need to put “my sory” up online because the news paper will be really interested. My story really isn’t that gripping or terrifying though. During the first night the exchange students spent in Chile there was un terremoto. All our plans were changed for Saturday (they were going to have a very structured day for us, but instead I got to play tennis). Luckily I still got to my host family on time.
My host brother however has a terrifying story. He keeps saying that he is lucky to be alive, gracias a díos. He was on the 11th floor of his friends apartments building in Viña. The whole place was swaying back and forth and chairs were sliding every where.
I went with Sebastian tonight to visit this friend, Andreo I think, but we didn’t stay long because mamá wanted us home by one. The friend only lives 4 houses down by the way. We sat outside and talked about the terremoto as well as other things. Tonight I also got 58 songs from Sebastian. Hay canciones de reggaeton y salsa y rap y electronico.
It is 2:10 now and in this house we leave doors open so I don’t think I will be sleeping much past 10. Nighty-night!

March 2nd 4:00PM
There were two more trembles last night. And I luckily didn’t wake up to them. I ended up sleeping in till 11 which was fantastic. Tere is the nanny here and she is an angle. She re-maked my bed and best of all she moved the stuff off my desk and to the
shelves so all the stuff is out of my way. She also washes my clothes and puts them in my closet.
We played on the swings and slide and practically tortured the rabbit. Then we came inside and had lunch and I taught them a few more card games. So far I’ve taught them B.S., Spoons, Spit/Speed, Rat-A-Tat-Cat, and Egyptian Rat Screw. I think now I am going swimming but I haven’t been in a bathing suit for ever....!

March 2nd 8:04 PM
There was another tremble. I didn’t even bother to go outside and neither did anybody else.

March 2nd 10:40 PM
I think I will be headed over to Andrés Colon’s house. I put both names down b/c I really don’t know what to call him. Oh well. Here I will get online. If I bring my computer or not who knows but hopefully I can get online to just say that I am safe to my friends. Unfortunately I think mamá wants us home early again.
Let me see, what else? Well because Sebastian so kindly gave me music I gave him some as well. Techno, rap, and hip hop dominate the mix of 50 songs. My family also called. If this gets up in the next day or two: Logan and the rest of the under-class men, good luck on CSAPS; and upper-class men I hope you enjoy your easy days. Here school has been delayed until the 8th. This is fantastic because other wise I would be starting tomorrow. I got to say that I’m a bit nervous to start especially with the always present possibility of a tremble.

Piquarkín

Feb 26th 11:40
So I am sitting here watching people dance. I should join them but I am too goddamn tired. Where am I? you might be asking. Well, this is an old boy scout camp that is now open to the public. There are cabins with about 10 bunks each, which, as you can imagine, get very crowed with a group of girls and their two bags each. We got here (don’t worry I took photos on the way) and then had a lunch of pollo y papas fritas. There was also fresh fruit that had a flavor which was really weird to see but defiantly appreciated. After stuffing ourselves we wanted to get some exercise. Most of us decided to go swimming but I stupidly got dressed for running and then was told I should not go. As a result of my lack of bathing suit I learned how to throw a boomerang, this turned out to be a semi-fail though. Después de eso we had a fire where we symbolically burnt our fears about our AFS Chile stay. It was a large fire for a short event. I was just forced to dance. Good night!

February 27th 3:45AM
I hope you know something is already wrong by looking at the time. My first earthquake. I woke up feeling like I was in a carnival wagon like the one in the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus. I thought that our cabins were movable and this was the camps way of being time efficient by transporting us while we slept. But quickly I realized that the scenery outside was not moving. Once coming to this realization I decied that we were in a earthquake and said the first thing that came to mind which summed up to be of cuss words. Most people said they felt like they were in airplane turbulence during the quake, not a caravan...
Never the less, I am safe. Everyone is. It is so frustrating not having internet because I want to tell my host family and everyone else just what happened and that I’m safe. I’m worried that either everyone will know al about it and need to reach me or know nothing about it and not believe me if I told them. AFS is luckily calling both our host families and our regular families. I hope there is not much destruction in Santiago. I should have taken a photo of the camp before because now the back of the middle canopy thing has collapsed. So those are the pictures that you will see. We just had one and it just felt like we were all on sea legs, more like California quakes. Thus far its been a fun experience I just hope that there are no strong after-shocks. And jez it’s cold.

February 27th 7:20AM
We finally moved inside. The electricity went out so they waited until it started getting light to check out this big empty room. So outside it was freezing They brought us blankets from the beds. By the end of the night everyone had at least one blanket but it was still surprisingly cold. The estrellas were beautiful though. Through out the night I counted five aftershocks none of them were anything very significant though. I left my camera in the room so I didn’t get any pictures of the piles of the bundled up exchange students or the sunrise. The sunrise was funny because I had fallen asleep to a clear starry sky and woke up about an hour or two later to milky gray sky. The sun rising behind the mountains created a beautiful silhouette. Now 6 aftershocks. I just heard that 47 people have died. Bridges (puentes) in Santiago have collapsed. The epicenter is a bit father north then Concepción and it was an 8.8 there. Here they say it was about an 7.5. The Serbian-Austrian is texting his family and they said that a tsunami is possibly coming to Viña del Mar. I’m a bit worried about my host family because I have not heard anything from them.

Traveling

February 26 4:15 AM somewhere
Miami orientation was. Not good not bad just was. One of the more helpful activities was when a girl (from north Mexico) came to talk to us about her year in Chile. After she talked she passed out a chilean slang cheep sheet. Cahcai? Overall the best bart of orientating was talking to the other 10 students from the US going to Chile, and of course the 3 Brazilian students. This is a great group of “extraordinary high school students” We all have so much to talk about. I feel really lucky that I ended up rooming with who I did ( even though it was only for one night). Maya (not mE-ah por su puesto) is from Los Angles and is truly an amazing person. She also had to deal with the crazy Los Angles consulate and like Raleigh did not get her student Visa. And I really like her fashion-style. Of the other 9 students there are only to boys. Raleigh and Glen seem to be adapting pretty well to this situation though.
By the way I am in the plane. But this blog will be posted once I get somewhere with internet (thats free). I also have a terribly uncomfortable kangaroo pouch. It is meant to be worn inside the shirt but I find I usually take it out. Passports are not meant to rest across my tummy. Oh well... It is a much better way to keep track of one’s passport rather then in the front pocket of my backpack along with my cards, gum, wallet vaseline: basically everything that I am constantly looking for. Yahn!

February 26 Medio dia en Chile
I am dead tired. I think I got 3 hours of sleep during that 8 hour plan ride. Oh goody! I guess that Raleigh didn’t end up getting his passport stamped as he went through immigration so he was technically an illegal alien for about 10 minutes. That is defiantly something to brag about. The AFS USA joined up with AFS Austria who had already found the AFS Chile representatives. After that we were shortly joined buy AFS Thailand and after them one from France. And they keep coming! Now I am sitting on the floor writing. I have not been totally anti-social though. I went over to AFS-ers from Japan by my self. they don’t speak any English so we can only speak in Spanish to each other. Cachai? Oh and I got a compliment on my Spanish! Soy muy feliz!! I talked to the AFS Chile people and told them I was staying in Calera de Tango. They reconized where it was but were disappointed that I was not in Santiago. Oh well. I am closer to the City then every AFS USA student which is crazy.
Being social now! Adios!
